Karen Kuntz started at Home Sweet Home’s soup kitchen on June 7, 2013 and has volunteered over 350 hours.  Karen was a stay at home mom for several years but was always involved in her children’s schools and church.  As the youngest entered high school, Karen realized she wasn’t needed as much so she started praying about what to do.  In her church bulletin she read that Home Sweet Home was seeking volunteers.  She initially volunteered every other week but got hooked and loved it so much that she switched to a weekly serving time.

Sarah Tunall

Sarah Tunall started volunteering at Home Sweet Home in December of 2014.  Originally it was part of her job to help with the Client Christmas Party.  Later her passion became to walk with people who are on a different path of life than hers.  In response to God for what He has done for us, she believes we are called to serve others.

Devotions have helped Sarah more than she expected.  The majority of conversations are around what God has been doing in her life.  Words that residents share have been healing to her.  Sarah has had some rough patches …

Brittany Bruckner

Brittany Bruckner

Brittany Bruckner started at Home Sweet Home’s Lincoln Mission Mart on March 21, 2016 and has already completed over 107 hours of service.  Her job coach, Jason Lawrence, recommended Lincoln Mission Mart as a place to volunteer.  Brittany was interested and thought it would be a good fit.  Brittany helps with organizing and stocking shelves and general cleaning of the store.

She shared that she is friendly, always smiling and volunteering at Lincoln Mission Mart makes her happy.  Brittany greets the customers when they walk in and when they leave.

Tod Birdsall

In February of 2015, Tod Birdsall’s pastor asked him if he had an interest in helping with a computer class at Home Sweet Home.  Tod has a background in computers so he thought it would be a good fit. Since then he has volunteered over 33 hours.

Nadine Prall read in the bulletin at St. Pat’s of Merna that help was needed serving lunch on Fridays at Home Sweet Home.  So in October of 2013 she started serving and fell in love with the people – staff and residents.  She also shopped quite frequently at Bloomington Mission Mart and eventually added volunteering at the store in her schedule. Cindy Lovell

Cindy Lovell had previous interactions with Home Sweet Home as she helped hand out food boxes for Thanksgiving and her church held worship services at HSHM.  She also was familiar with a couple of previous staff members.  Later on she felt like her life was out of balance as she was doing service at her church but not in the community.  In September of 2013 she decided to activate her faith by serving at Home Sweet Home in the food pantry that is now called the Bread for Life Food Co-op and has served over 116 hours.

Judi Jacobs

Judi Jacobs was searching for something more fulfilling to do with her time.  She also wanted her 12 year old daughter to be more aware of how different her life is from others and how fortunate she is.  Around that same time Judi received Home Sweet Home’s Newsletter with the story about a mother and daughter holding art classes for the children residing at Home Sweet Home.

Alexander Goldman

Alexander Goldman had seen advertisements regarding Home Sweet Home Ministries and knew that HSHM was well known.  Alexander checked the Home Sweet Home website and submitted his volunteer application.  He has volunteered over 200 hours.

Alexander picks up donations from a local grocery store but knows his contribution is part of the bigger picture.  These items are used for the BFL Co-op and also meals prepared at HSHM to serve those in need.

Bonnie Kelly

Bonnie Kelly works at Bloomington High School with the Step Program.  Last year she connected with Home Sweet Home by bringing a group of students to volunteer in the Warehouse sorting jewelry and greeting cards.  Bonnie believes this teaches them good work habits and is a good place for a first time experience.

Bonnie and the students help with getting the jewelry or greeting cards sorted, bagged and ready for resale at the Mission Mart stores.  In turn this creates funds to provide for the people residing in the shelter.  Bonnie says the students are doing a great job and …

Bonnie Owens

Bonnie Owens started volunteering in the Food Pantry September of 2012.  Since then the Food Pantry has converted to the Bread for Life Food Co-op.  Bonnie has volunteered over 335 hours.

When Bonnie worked she felt she had more money than time.  She also realized she was more fortunate than others.  After being retired a couple of years, she felt she had more time and wanted to give back.  Home Sweet Home offered several different areas for volunteering and the flexibility to move around in those areas.

Fred Nimke

Fred Nimke started volunteering at Home Sweet Home on July 28, 2014 by helping with various carpentry projects. 

He has volunteered over 500 hours. Fred first heard about Home Sweet Home from his friend from Calvary United Methodist Church, Joe, who was already volunteering at Home Sweet Home.  Shortly after that a HSHM staff member had a display for volunteers at Fred’s church.  After Fred read the paperwork on Home Sweet Home he signed up to volunteer.

Joe Landon

Joe Landon began volunteering at Home Sweet Home on January 30, 2014 by facilitating a Creative Expressions Evening of Art Class for the residents on Tuesday evenings.  He has also participated in HSHM Run for Hope event and has volunteered over 160 hours.

He uses art to connect with the residents so it allows them to communicate in art and let go.  Sometimes residents do nothing and then later on in another class will be excited to create some art.

Richard Garmon

Richard Garmon came to Home Sweet Home back in January 2013 with a job coach from MarcFirst. Eventually Richard started coming on his own to help sort shoes and accessories.

In his weekly 2 hour time slot, Richard sorts through two large bins (gaylords) of shoes/accessories.  He matches up the donated shoes and separates the accessories from the shoes to make sure they are in the proper bins. The Warehouse Manager stated that Richard is vital to the shoe department with all he accomplishes.

Kelly did a Google search for volunteer opportunities in the area that involved serving with people and something she could do with her 10 year old daughter, Saige.  Home Sweet Home came up in the search so Kelly submitted her application.  They started out with helping with child care while parents attended a Faith and Finance Class.  Shortly after that class was finished, Kelly received a call to help with a class of arts/crafts for the children residing at Home Sweet Home.

Staci Yehl and her family started volunteering at Home Sweet Home in January 2011. She learned of Home Sweet Home through local churches and shopping at the Bloomington Mission Mart Thrift Store. The family wanted to give back to the community and teach their boys about community service. The Yehl’s first volunteer experience was helping with removal of all Christmas decorations in the shelter.

Dr. Josh Johnson’s connection to Home Sweet Home came about when he visited a nonprofit booth at the Chamber of Commerce and spoke with HSHM staff. He had just moved to the area where he started his new chiropractic service so wasn’t able to give financially. Dr. Johnson experienced firsthand how chiropractic services can change a life, so he knew that he could give back by volunteering his services.

Kathy Sauder started volunteering at HSHM in December 2009. She has volunteered in the kitchen at Home Sweet Home and helped with Children’s Study Club. Her main volunteer area is leading clients in a morning Devotion.
