Joe Landon began volunteering at Home Sweet Home on January 30, 2014 by facilitating a Creative Expressions Evening of Art Class for the residents on Tuesday evenings. He has also participated in HSHM Run for Hope event and has volunteered over 160 hours.
He uses art to connect with the residents so it allows them to communicate in art and let go. Sometimes residents do nothing and then later on in another class will be excited to create some art.
One of the benefits for Joe comes from the fact that we are all broken in some way. It brings him great joy to see a resident experience satisfaction from their art but also helps him in his own brokenness. He enjoys working with people and feels we should all treat others the way we want to be treated. Joe’s favorite quote, “If I can love the unlovable, then it is plausible that somebody would love me.” Author unknown.
Joe’s words of wisdom for anyone thinking of volunteering at Home Sweet Home would be to step out of your comfort zone and just do it. People would be amazed that we are all the same. Joe claims “The joy and blessings I receive from volunteering is bigger than any I have received so far”.
