Deuteronomy 15:11 – Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.”
Hundreds of people came together to open their hands, hearts, and pockets to help their neighbors in need through HSHM’s 3rd annual Night in a Car event on February 1-2. My deepest gratitude goes out to all who were involved in any way. Their efforts will help HSHM continue to provide a ministry of refuge and renewal powered by Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God.

2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
Who does not enjoy something shiny and new? Replacing 2018 with 2019 does not automatically make everything new, but being in Christ guarantees newness in every minute of every day. No matter who we are, HSHM employee, volunteer, or service recipient, we may have a tendency to be ruled by old hurts, old behaviors, and old ways of thinking. My prayer for 2019 is that all will recognize the newness that Christ offers and live into that newness, every day.

1 Timothy 2:1 – First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone.
Prayer is powerful. Prayer changes people and outcomes. One of Home Sweet Home Ministries’ faithful donors has requested prayers for her grandfather, Charles, who is in fragile health. I invite you to join me in praying for Charles, his family, and all who are involved in his care. Who are you lifting up in prayer? Please pray for our residents, that they will invite Jesus into their hearts during this season when we celebrate His birth. Please pray for the staff, volunteers, and recipients of our Christmas Day meals. And above all, let us give thanks to God for His great love, brought to earth in the person of Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:17 – So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!
Home Sweet Home Ministries recently launched its Rapid Rehousing Program Already two people have found housing through the program. The financial assistance component of Rapid Rehousing makes it possible for participants to leave behind outstanding utility bills, past evictions, and poor rental histories. The program allows people to start fresh and new, with a clean slate. Our Rapid Rehousing Navigator, Aaron, goes beyond offering housing assistance; he connects with participants on a personal and spiritual level. He encourages program participants to celebrate the newness that God provides.

Luke 2:52 – And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.
As a young person, I participated in a camp whose mission was drawn from this Bible verse, with an emphasis on mental, physical, spiritual, and social growth. Having launched into the new school year, I am mindful of the many ways in which these four areas of growth are central to life at HSHM. New university students are volunteering at our warehouse as a way to grow in their social responsibility. The new president of Heartland Community College recently toured HSHM and is committed to the partnership between HCC and HSHM. New interns, work study students, and employees are learning their new roles at HSHM. Our child residents are getting acclimated to their schools, teachers, classrooms, and bus routines. Residents who are parents are learning their responsibilities related to their children’s education. Employees at HSHM are constantly learning and growing in our ability to work well together as a team for the glory of God. Jesus shows us the way to grow!

Galatians 5:1 - For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
The yearning for freedom speaks to the human spirit. The Christian faith offers freedom from the weight of sin and freedom to love others as God has loved us. At Home Sweet Home Ministries, we help our residents discover freedom from the burdens of debt, broken relationships, and separation from the God who created them and loves them. We help them discover the freedom to become the capable and loving persons that God created them to be. My prayer is that all of God's children will experience the freedom that only God can provide.

Genesis 1:5 – God called the light Day and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
On February 2, 100 brave souls spent the night away from their warm and comfortable homes and beds. They spent the night in their cars, raising awareness of homelessness in our community and raising funds for the services we provide at HSHM. I praise God for the participants and all who supported them. Together they raised over $46,000 They had an experience that they will not forget and they gained a deeper understanding of the challenges that many of their neighbors face.

Luke 2:10 - 11: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord." The above quoted Scripture was said by the angels to the shepherds on the night that Christ was born in Bethlehem. Christ's coming into the world continues to be good news that causes great joy for all people. I think of the people who will prepare, distribute, and receive special holiday meals. Good news, great joy! I think of those who have found safe shelter from life's physical and emotional storms. Good news, great joy! I think of those who are receiving gifts of grace and forgiveness this holiday season. Good news, great joy! I think of those who are learning that the good news and great joy are for all people. My prayer for all people is that they will experience the good news that causes great joy. Merry Christmas!

John 13:35 – “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Thursdays are my days to go into the men’s and women’s lounges before lunch to pray with our residents. Last Thursday, as I approached one of our residents and asked him if he had any prayer requests, he offered to pray for me and with me. We held hands and prayed together. What a blessing! Our work at HSHM is not a one-way street. I only hope and pray that the work I do blesses our residents, staff, volunteers, and donors as much as they bless me. I pray that each person reading this will experience God’s love through the love of their neighbors.

Matthew 7:25 – The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.
The people affected by Hurricane Harvey and other natural disasters are on our minds and in our prayers. When the storms of life come our way, we feel tossed, torn, and devastated. A solid faith foundation helps us withstand those storms. I pray for all who feel beaten down by literal and figurative storms, especially those who seek refuge at Home Sweet Home. I pray that we can help them find a solid foundation that will help them withstand the storm.
Be joyful in HOPE, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayerRomans 12:12
