COVID-19 Precautions Update

March 12, 2020

I want to provide everyone with an update to HSHM’s steps to responsibly prepare for the possibility of someone presenting with COVID-19, the disease caused by the Coronavirus.

  1. Effective immediately, and at the recommendation from the McLean County Health Department, HSHM’s dining center will be closed to all non-shelter guests.  At this time we will continue to allow any employee or volunteer to use the dining room as usual.  This is a precautionary move we are making, following the example of the IL Department on Aging who has instructed all of their senior centers to “suspend all gathering activities” including group meals.  We will be offering sack lunches to any of our non-shelter guests who require ongoing assistance with meals.
  2. We have implemented enhanced sanitization procedures across the organization.
  3. We have stopped accepting all prepared food donations that come from non-commercial kitchens.
  4. We have suspended all group volunteer activities until further notice.
  5. The Bread For Life food co-op remains open for shopping by current members.  No new work assignments are being scheduled at this time.

As events continue to develop, I will continue to provide you with any updates to our response to ensure the safety, health, and wellbeing of our staff, volunteers, and clients.

As before, please don’t hesitate to talk with me if you have any concerns or questions about the steps we are taking.
